"Is Our Soil Safe?"
IS OUR SOIL SAFE? -AN ESSAY FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES Every American’s eyes were glued to their televisions, as they observed the twin towers of New York crumble in agonizing defeat. The United States is struck with an intentional blow to its unassailable heart. The pride and freedom of the greatest country in the world has discovered defeat and loss of hope for an invulnerable future. Can we live in immunity once more and can we prevent another devastating terrorist assault? On November 25, 2002, George W. Bush signed the Homeland security bill, allowing the Homeland security department to take form. “We are doing everything we can to protect Americans,” stated Bush. The new department will set up a group of over 170,000 employees and 24 agencies. Among these agencies include the move of the Coast Guard, Customs Services, Border Patrol, and Secret Service. By March 1, 2003, these agencies plan to be in operation under the new department of the Executive branch.
