Jack Williams Dr. Wilkes English 1043 October 12, 2002 Extra Innings: When the Game is Done It takes hold of the soul like no other. How does one explain it? I don’t know. On the night of our Regional Championship, baseball did just that to my team. This was a night where my team’s faith met with its determination. Determined not to lose, we took the field on June 8th, 2002 in Noblesville, Indiana ready and prepared to bring home a trophy our school hadn’t seen in 17 years. Determined not to lose, my fellow Southport Cardinals and I stared at the American flag before the game, dreaming of a goal we had been ardently working for for nine months: the State Finals. Determined not to lose, we lost. The Regional Championship game for my baseball team was one of a bittersweet outcome in that it was a game of passion, just as all baseball is, a game of turmoil and triumph, and a game that perhaps taught me some critical lessons despite the loss. Pure and true, passion is a word beyond drive, beyond love. In baseball, passion is that desire to simple play the game and play it well. There are those who know this kind of passion, who love and adore it. For me, this passion was and is not only displayed while playing the game of baseball, but also watching my favorite teams play as well. Each and every year my soul hopes that this year might possibly be the year for the Chicago Cubs, and each and every year I end up saying the old phrase, “Maybe next year.” One cannot possibly love and adore the Chicago Cubs, a team that hasn’t won the World Series in almost 100 years, without having that craze and passion for the game of baseball. For me and my team, this zeal was there that night.
