One of the aims of the declaration is to protect the rights of individuals by law by teaching and educating individuals to promote respect for the rights of others. This does not only benefit the individual but society as a whole and also encourages positive relations with other countries. The declaration contains a variety of thirty articles. Below is a list of eight of the key points of the declaration relevant to my work placement. - Article 1 promotes equality and dignity - Article 2 anti-discriminatory practice - Article 3 the right to live independently - Article 5 promotes community care/de-institutionalisation - Article 6 right to individuality - Article 7 equality and protection against discrimination - Article 8 right to be heard (advocacy/reviews) - Article 10 independent bodies/Disability Commission The work placement I attend is a voluntary organisation, which originated in the 1800’s. The organisation has made consistent progress over the years and is now one of the leading service providers in the care sector today. This has been achieved by promoting a person centred approach and by providing staff with adequate training to ensure service users receive the best possible service. The organisations standards also adhere to the requirements of other pieces of legislation. The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 states all individuals should be treated equally.
