Jane Eyre: Summary of Chapters 1-20 The story of Jane Eyre takes place in an estate called Gateshead Hall. Jane Eyre is ten years old and resides with her deceased uncle’s wife and family. Mrs. Reed, her uncle’s wife, has three children: Eliza, John and Georgiana. None of the family likes Jane and they always taunt and tease her. In fact, one day John throws a book at Jane and Jane is the one who is caught after she tries to defend herself against John. Jane is locked into Mr. Reed’s old room which is said to be haunted. Jane is captured and taken into the room by the family’s nurse, Bessie and another maid named Abbot. Bessie is usually nice to Jane because she pities the condition that she is in. She has no mom or dad and no other family than the Reed’s, who don’t even acknowledge her. Jane was locked into Mr. Reed’s room for a long time and screams because she thought she saw a ghost. She is sick for a couple days after and a doctor is called. The doctor’s name was Mr. Lloyd. Mr. Lloyd asks Jane is she wants to go to school and Jane says she does. A couple months later a strange man named Mr. Brockelhurst arrives at Gateshead Hall and takes Jane to a school for orphan girls called Lowood Institute. Before leaving for Lowood, Jane hasn’t seen or talked to Mrs.
