Pony Ride The poem “women” composed by May Swenson in 1967 is a statement about women made written during a time when feminist issues were very large. She writes that women should be pedestals to men and that women are like the gladdest and sweetest toy in the playroom, the rocking horse. She writes that the certain I will be taking a textual approach to this poem. I will examine the structure of the poem and how it affects the way the poem is read. The unique form or shape in which the poem is written is the most significant feature. It is also a trademark of May Swenson, because many of her poems are defined by their shape. And although the structure is something that the reader first notices about the poem, the words are what the reader is affected by. “Women” by May Swenson is a poem containing extremely unique form combined with brilliantly chosen words that cause the poem to become a piece of great art. This piece of literature is different because of its shape.
