Gloria Steinem was a major influence of the women’s movement in the 1960’s. Perhaps, one of the most influential woman activists of all time. Having herself experienced the depravation that women suffered, she realized that her rights in society were unjust. Using her past experiences, Gloria helped create a more equal society for women generations to come. She used the media, politics, and literature to influence a change in women’s rights in the United Sates. The change that she created would end up evolving in to the rights and equality between the sexes that we have today. Steinem’s use of the media through Ms. magazine would greatly help further the movement. By the summer of 1970 every major national magazine had done its cover story on feminism (1). It wasn’t until December of 1971 that a magazine would be created for the sole purpose of the independence of women. 300,000 copies of the Ms. magazine preview issue, dated spring 1972 were on their way to magazine wholesalers for distribution from coast to coast. Steinem and the others who worked on or wrote for the issue would tour the country to do local appearances and speeches on television, radio, and newspaper interviews (2). The Ms. magazine would turn out to be a monthly advocate for the women’s movement and featured many different articles to better the life of women. Columns such as “Populist Mechanics” would further a women’s knowledge with advice on hammering nails or servicing the family car. Another regular column “Body/Mind” gave women information on birth control and diagrams of the body. Women’s health was a big issue and a major area of concern for feminists in the early seventies. There were very few doctors and women would often follow the “doctors orders” without direction or even understanding. Ms magazine was indirectly challenging the authority of the medical profession with revolutionary zeal (3). Steinem had a flare for writing short, snappy items. She was always trying to find space in Ms. for little pieces of information. She also acted as editor for the magazine in a number of issues. Steinem wanted to include the voices of women who were not necessarily writers. She was deeply committed to having the magazine be a vehicle for the stories of women who were not directly able to get there message to the media. She worked out a format where, after lengthy interviews, she would cast the article in the voice of the subject (4).
