In the final module of Science and Theology Dr. Quinn talked in great detail about the brain and its functions. Dr. Shirley related some of the functions of the brain to spiritual experiences one might encounter. The autonomic nervous system is one of the parts of the brain that is said to have spiritual experiences leading to meditation. “The autonomic nervous system is responsible for regulating fundamental functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and digestion.”( Newberg) Within the autonomic nervous system there are two branches which compose it: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems. The two parts are very different and both conduct different task in our brain. “The sympathetic system is the basis of the body’s fight-or-flight response, which gives us the adrenaline boost we need to escape or defend ourselves from danger.” ( Newberg) “The arousal system is also activated by positive experiences- it makes the hunter’s heart beat faster as he closes in upon his prey, for instance.” (Newberg) The sympathetic system also allows you to become sexual aroused and the body becomes ready for physical action.
