Soccer: A Game of Hard Knocks People have many different opinions of what the toughest sport is to play, and the most physically demanding. Throughout time you have heard of mass soccer riots in Italy, to television commercials sporting a naked man running across the field in the middle of a soccer game. Despite the outside distractions, the players continue to do what they are paid for, and that is to play the toughest sport on earth, soccer. When you hear names such as Pele, Preke, Ronaldo, or America's own, Alexi Lalas, I'm sure you think of some of the greatest soccer players ever. Although they are the best the world has to offer, even they had to put up with nagging or serious injuries to play the sport they love. Soccer players have been referred to as sissies or wimps, from other sports athletes like, football players and hockey players. They have also had to listen as people told them to play a different sport. What other sport offers you tackling, taking a ball to the head or face, virtually no pads (except shin pads.), and athletes playing through serious injuries like broken bones, and pulled muscles? None; that's why I think soccer is the toughest sport to play. Soccer is rougher than most people actually think. People usually don't see what's happening outside the television camera’s view or off the field.
