First Pro Many people think of only one type of child abuse. The term abuse covers a wide range of behaviors that may or may not involve actual physical abuse. Some are: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, forced confinement, neglect, abuse towards pets or property, spiritual abuse, witnessing abuse, and financial abuse (Wise 35). The four main types of child abuse are sexual, physical, emotional, and neglect. Sexual abuse is the employment, use, persuasion, inducement, enticement, or coercion of any child to engage in, or assist any other person to engage in any sexually explicit conduct or simulation of such conduct for the purpose of producing a visual depiction of such conduct. Sexual abuse is also the rape, statutory rape, molestation, prostitution, or other forms of sexual exploitation of children, or incest with children (Pride 18). The National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect defines child physical abuse as: “The physical injury or maltreatment of a child under the age of eighteen by a person who is responsible for the child’s welfare under circumstances which indicate that the child’s wealth or welfare is harmed or threatened.” (Sanders 20).
