Shadows Fall At Sunrise
As the sun sets in the far away city of Toledo, the demons and freaks of nature come out of their slumber to hunt among the living … to hunt the living. On this night, a mortal soul will meet up with his deepest and darkest fears, and also will come to realize that what he feared was what he truly wished to embrace … but was too scared to admit. Kyle was a middle-aged soul of 36, bright and attractive to some, but in the eyes of the “beautiful people” of the world he was a poor creature that was worthless and beneath them. For years Kyle had wandered through his world searching for something, never quite knowing what it was. In his mind it was “to be loved and accepted” by the upper crust of society. He dreamed of women he could never have, loving a woman he could never possess, and having the things that only wealth could buy but never the desire to do what it would take to get to that end. He was a kind soul, harmed at birth and through his youth by parents that never wanted him and shunned him from conception. All his life he’d only known rejection and pain and being treated like a doormat for those with wealth, power and beauty. His youth was filled with addictions, fascinations and fantasies, along with so many heartbreaks. He had settled on a relationship because he was getting “too old to be alone” and it cost him much in his life. Now, nearing the middle portion of his natural life, Kyle was again alone and walking the streets … eyes down … going to a job he hated and doing tasks he did not like. But his heart held out hope, though his mind knew there was none. On this night, Kyle had no idea what he was getting himself in for as he walked home from work to the parking lot where his car sat, a quarter-mile walk to and fro each day. As he was leaving, a co-worker stopped him. “Hey Kyle, where are you headed?” “I’m getting out of here and heading home, I’m totally fried.” he replied. “But some of us were headed next door for a few drinks and maybe we’d go out chasing women? Wanna come?” “No thanks. I’m not much of a drinker and let’s face it,” he paused as he looked down at his attire of black tight jeans and Ottawa Senators hockey jersey, “I’m not exactly ‘a good catch’ unless it’s to someone who’s desperate.” With those final words spoken, he turned and put his head down as usual and headed for the parking lot about 8 blocks away. His co-worker tried to mumble something about ‘being too hard on himself,’ but Kyle had turned a deaf-ear to any further words and walked along the sidewalk on his long walk home. Along the way he saw a few nice looking ladies, dressed in decent business suits or pretty dresses and skirts. Having a thing for women’s’ legs, Kyle took a few long looks. One of the women caught him looking, and his eyes dropped immediately to the pavement as before. The woman just laughed and giggled to her co-workers. All he could overhear was a random comment about “not if he was the last man on the planet.” Kyle’s heart sunk in his chest and his pace slowed, allowing the women to get far enough away from him. Nearing his parking lot, Kyle stopped at the entrance to an alley and rested his backpack down on the ground and began to cry. After a rough day at work and already feeling depressed, this was like a dagger through the heart … one he could not take. He just looked up at the sky, tears in his eyes, and asked toward Heaven why he was placed on this planet if his whole life was to be nothing more than a punching bag for the cruel stings of man and woman. A few minutes of tears and swearing at the sky and Kyle picked up his backpack, wiped his tears, and made the last of the journey to the lot. Along the way he passed an old building everyday that looked like something out of the dark Gothic era, with steeples and columns that reminded him of a church design. He’d gone past this building everyday for over a year now … but today he felt really odd as he walked past. It was an eerie feeling, like eyes watching him. He looked all around, but saw nothing, except the name of the building … the Pythian Castle. He reached under his jersey and took a hold of his pepper spray and stood there for a moment, still feeling this cold chill of eyes upon him. Finally he just walked off quickly, though he kept looking back over his shoulder all the way. The drive home was no different, that uneasy feeling was still with him and no matter how much heat came from the car’s heater. Kyle still felt as if he was shivering. Twelve miles later and he was safe at his apartment. Once he arrived home he got out of his clothes in front of his bedroom window, with the blinds wide open. All the bums and whores in the other apartments could see as he removed his clothing. They could see his smooth pale skin of his hairless chest as he stood near the window. The light seemed to reflect off of his auburn hair, shining like little sunlight rays off his head. Now he wasn’t normally so careless, but on this night after such an exhausting day at work, he felt drained and wasn’t thinking very clearly. He decided to go take a shower to see if it would help him get his head straight, so he headed for his bathroom and turned on the shower. He gently stuck his hand beneath the stream of water coming from the showerhead to feel its temperature, when it was finally right he slowly got in. He enjoyed the feeling of the warm water beating down on his shoulders almost giving him a very gentle massage. He turned and began to soap up his body, running his soapy hands down his muscular legs and lathering his stomach. He washed his auburn-streaked hair and got out of the shower, when he finally realized that his blinds were up he ran to shut them. As he ran, he dropped the towel he had wrapped around his waist and the mix of cold air with the water on his body made his nipples and cock stand erect as the people behind him still funneling around their apartment doors continued to stare at his naked body. He quickly struggled to close the blinds. When he finally got them shut he went to lie on his bed, forgetting about the cold or the fact that he was naked, he laid there with his eyes closed and fell into a deep peaceful sleep. As he lie there in peaceful slumber, having dreams of love and grand treasures that will never be found by any man, the dark creatures that could easily become a part of us slowly crept into his room while he slept.
