"Analysing the Lottery"
Analysis of the Lottery “The Lottery,” by Shirley Jackson draws many parallels to society today. Her use of tradition and violence enlightens readers about things which take place in their own communities. It illustrates how inhumane, people can be towards one another. Also it demonstrates that as a society, we despise change. Behind this harsh story lies the truth of how human beings act. We are motivated by self-interest only. The black box is a symbol of tradition; it has been in the village for as longs as anyone can remember. The block box symbolizes how people in society, like to hold on to what is familiar and fear the unknown. “The box is symbolic of our loathing change; it is old and splintered showing that we cling to what is familiar rather than change,” (planet papers 1). In the story, the author talks about how the box is old and Mr. Summers tries to get a new box but no one likes that idea. “Mr. Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box, but no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by black box,” (Jackson, 272).
