Populist Party Platform 1) It was a political party formed primarily to express the agrarian protest of the late 19th century. Originally started by farmers, it turned to a wider array of membership including laborers and reformer who shared similar views on certain aspects of the economy. This boost in membership gave it more political clout. Most of its members were against big businesses and for the working man. They wanted legislation to help rid the economy of the ills that plagued the farmers and laborers, yet benefited big business. Although they had similar goals, different members of the party focused on different goals. While some farmers pushed for the unlimited coinage of silver, the laborers would demand things like the 8-hour work-day. 2) They believed that it was the government’s fault in that it was not active in helping to protect the economic situations of the farmers and workers.
