Bodies are represented in various manners in film. The way a body is used can represent, sexuality, power, beauty and wealth to name but a few. Women and men’s bodies can represent different things in different ways. Sexuality can be represented by the stereotypical beautiful woman or by the pin up male. Body language can tell us an awful lot about ones feelings and behaviour. Things can be determined in not what people say but the way they see it and how they use their body in the process. Body language and gestures can show us just as much as words tell us. In films it is what we visually see that makes an impact more so than the words you hear. The film I have chosen is the early 1990’s film basic instinct starring Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas. The film follows the stone as a femme fatale who uses her sexuality and body to seduce and captivate all those around her. She uses this power to her advantage eventually getting away with murder. The film at the time shocked the film world as rarely such violence and power had been seen from a leading woman. This type of violence is only ever seen from a male. The film centres on stones use of her sexuality to manipulate her peers. Basic Instinct goes against the traditional film trends in which men are represented as active, controlling subjects and woman as passive objects. “ Film has been called an instrument of the male gaze, producing representations of woman, the good life, the sexual fantasy from a male point of view”. (?)It is Stone’s character that steps outside the mould and treats the men around her in a controlling manner. She uses her look and gaze to reach her desires. Stone uses her naked body and revealing clothes to manipulate people. In one scene when Douglas and his partner come into her home, she deliberately keeps the door ajar, while she is getting dressed. The male can see her naked body reflected in the mirror. She revels in him watching her and enjoys the fact that she is making him vulnerable and under her sexual power/influence. “In the film various camera angles were used to show the woman’s body “ The mirror is often used to show a woman’s vanity”(?) Berger 31 Berger believes that woman now accept, that they are sometimes there to be looked at. No matter how they are portrayed on screen or paper they are always aware of the spectator. Basic instinct relies on this to carry the story.
