I was walking through the woods late last night coming home from church, when I herd chanting and singing of songs, which seemed to be from the Barbados tongue. I was curious to where and whom it was coming from so I ventured into the woods to find the source. As I got closer I heard screaming and saw the glow of a large bonfire I looked from around a tree and saw a dress on the ground and a figure of a young woman running naked through the woods. I spotted my young daughter Betty and my niece Abigail along with some of the other girls of the town sporting around the large growing inferno. I immediately took Betty and Abigail by the ear and gave them a good scolding, upon doing so Betty Fainted. I thought nothing of it as first just her being caught up in the excitement of the whole event. I carried her to her room and lied her in her bed and turned in for the night. The next morning I awoke and found Betty still unconscious in her bed and immediately prayed to god to find a cause of this illness, for I was afraid that the foul play of witchcraft was involved. During the middle of my prayed Abigail bursts in to tell me that Susanna Walcott has brought a message from Dr. Griggs. Susanna was summoned and said that Dr. Griggs could find no medicine for Betty’s illness in his books and suspected some unnatural cause for her illness. After Susanna’s exit I questioned Abigail if they were practicing witchcraft in the woods. Abigail in denial said, “It were sport, uncle!” (P.8). Goody Putnam and Thomas Putnam came by and told me that there only daughter Ruth, was showing the same symptoms as Betty. I called upon Reverend Hale who is a expert on witchcraft from the near town of Beverly to shed some light on our dilemma.
