To head off an economic boycott by civil rights groups, Georgia lawmakers have voted on replacing their state flag which currently is signified by, a Confederate emblem, the Dixie cross. Many blacks view this emblem as a symbol of oppression. On Friday, April 25, lawmakers voted on creating a new design for the state flag which would still be based on the Confederate national flag. As a result of this vote, some black lawmakers were left cheering, while others wept.
