When the Constitution of the United States was first written, our country desperately needed something new. Under the previous form of government, the Articles of Confederation, the central government was a weak one and the states had too much power as compared to the federal government, we needed something more effective. It was purposed to have a new form of government with strong central power that will be able to enforce laws made by a strong governing power with three branches: the executive (the president), judicial (Supreme Court), and legislative (Congress). Under the Articles of Confederation there was no way to enforce unity between states. This led to competition between states for land and commerce. States made up laws that contradicted laws of another state, they had different currency, and on top of all that for the whole country to go to war every state had to vote to go to war.
