Johann was born in 1822 in Morivian Village of Heinzendorf. He had two sisters named Veronica and Theresia. As a boy Johann loved school. His dearest wish was to go to high school. Unfortunately, his family just didn't have that kind of money so he tried to go through high school living on half the food he needed as a growing boy. Then a terrible thing happened. His father had an injury that prevented him from working; a tree fell on him. So they agreed the only choice was to sell the farm. Luckily Theresia was married and her husband agreed to buy the farm that they owned.
