Character Profile – Calpurnia Calpurnia is the black maid for the Finches. She grew up with the Finch family with Scout and Jem's grandfather teaching her how to read and write. Calpurnia is respected by all in the Finch household and is treated as a person, except for Aunt Alexandra who treats Calpurnia like a slave. This may be due to the fact that Alexandra has no children of her own and she envies Calpurnia, as she is the ‘mother figure’ in Scout and Jem’s lives. Calpurnia is a very trustworthy and reliable person in the eye of Scout and Atticus. Scout has no hesitance to ask Calpurnia about issues that are on her mind e.g. rape. Even though Calpurnia’s answers are not always what Scout wants to hear.
