Scholars have recently identified concertive control as an essential factor in constraining teamwork. However, there was a lack of a well-validated scale to help analyze how team members control their behaviors in a cencertive manner. Due to this, in the study “Assessing Concertive Control in the Team Environment” (2000), Brett M. Wright and James R. Barker focused on developing and validating a psychological scale that can create a greater understanding of concertive control and provide a useful tool for further studies. To develop the new scale, a list of survey items were selected from other related studies. Next, the researchers abstracted a set of potential items according to two focus groups’ responses. Lastly, four dynamics of concertive control: shared values, normative expectation, rule formation and peer relationships were used to determine the final items. As a result, an 8-item “concertive control scale” with a 5-point response format that can be described as “1-to a very little extent” to “5-to a very great extent” was developed.
