DESCRIPTION: The Oesophagus is like a stretchy pipe about 10 inches long. It is a muscle tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. The Oesophagus has white tissue on the inside to make it easy for the food to get down. At the back of your throat is your windpipe that lets air come in and out of your body. When you swallow a small ball of mushed-up food, a special flap called the epiglottis flops down over the windpipe to make sure the food goes into the oesophagus and not the windpipe.
