School Leadership Survey for Educators (by Artie L. Borders) The following outline is a list of questions from which educators and administrators can draw from to measure the climate of their learning environments. It is a very beneficial tool that can be used as a basis for improvement, funding and reporting. The book, Measuring School Climate by Dr. H. Jerome Freiberg was used as an aid in preparing this essay and questionnaire. Good luck. I. School Climate. A. Physical school environment 1. The classrooms in my school sufficiently meet the needs of my student/staff population. 2. The physical condition of my school complies with all health and safety guidelines. 3. The school has adequate storage space to safeguard school supplies and equipment. 4. The school is able to meet the supply and equipment needs of my staff. 5. The school is cleaned and sanitized daily and as needed. 6. The interior and exterior facilities and grounds are well-maintained at our school. 7. The school’s ventilation system is consistently adequate/comfortable during school hours. 8. The lighting in the classrooms/corridors is sufficient and enhances the educational process. B. School social system 1. Teacher/staff interactions with the principal are generally cooperative and harmonious. 2. Teacher/staff interactions with other administrators are cooperative and harmonious. 3. Teachers and staff are able to express themselves without the fear of repercussions. 4. Teachers and staff are empowered and feel like they are participants in decision-making. 5. Student/teacher interactions are generally cooperative and harmonious. 6. Student interactions with non-teaching personnel (administrators, support staff, etc.) are generally cooperative and harmonious. 7. There is a strong gang subculture in the school community. 8. There is a strong gang presence in my school. 9. The school has a zero tolerance policy against gang activity. 10. The school has a zero tolerance policy against weapons in our school. 11.
