The short story we read was called “Rest in Peace: The ‘I Can’t’ Funeral”. This story is about a teacher, Donna, who helps her 4th grade students refrain from using the phrase “I can’t” in their sentences. Donna uses a complicated but memorable way of teaching her students that “I can’t” should never hold them back. The story takes place in a small-town Michigan school where the narrator and principal, Chick, is observing on a class of 4th grade children. The pupils are being taught by Donna, a school-teacher 2 years away from retirement. She is teaching under a country-wide staff development project.
