Shawshank Redemption: Theme of Freedom
The theme of freedom is explored in the film Shawshank Redemption in many ways. Freedom is shown throughout the film in many different ways but I will focus on the main ways freedom is explored. The theme of Freedom is explored in the scene where Andy and a group of fellow prisoners are sitting on the rooftop of a license-plate factory drinking beer after they had been tarring it. Sitting on the roof with the sun over their shoulders drinking beer, they felt like they weren’t prisoners, but free men who could have just completed tarring the roofs of their own houses and relaxing with a couple of beers. The lighting is used with great effect with the sun setting in the background. This works well with the angles of the cameras and the background music to express the freedom all the prisoners feel. Everyone felt free while relaxing and drinking beer, but Andy felt free and like he was living his normal life out of prison again by sitting there looking at everyone drinking his beer.
