Old Jail
The Old Jail On a recent trip to St. Augustine, I toured the remarkable old jail. This building was completed in 1891 and I am amazed that it is still standing today. The old jail housed prisoners for over sixty years until it was turned into a historical site. During the tour, one of the first places that I viewed was the tiny living quarters of the sheriff and his family. The sheriff only made a measly two dollars per day while he worked in the jail. I guess the free living space made up for the low salary. I would not want to live in a place that was full of criminals especially if some were in there for committing murder. Several replicas of old furniture and different antique items could be seen in the living quarters. The tour guide told a few horrifying stories of things that happened to sheriff and his family while they lived there.
