Quality and Quantity of Othello's love
A love is considered great in quality if it is pure and simple – with no lies and deceit between those that love, and with truth and the ability to talk openly with your partner. The quantity of love does not depend on quality. Instead, it can be described as passion and craze. “Then must you speak/Of one that loved not wisely but too well”. This statement is accurate in that the quantity of Othello’s love for Desdemona was bordering on obsession. It was based on his admiration for her angelic personality and her love for him. Another example is Othello’s love for Iago. Othello loves Iago as a friend ‘too well’ and ‘not wisely’ enough. He blindly trusts Iago due to this unwise love and hence is unable to see the darker side of ‘honest Iago’. The quality of love is governed by what the love between the partners is based on. For example, Othello’s love for Desdemona is of low quality.
