Diabetes Diabetes is a group of disorders that results when there is too much glucose (sugars) in the blood. It occurs when the body does not make enough insulin or when the body is not able to use insulin effectively. Glucose comes from the food you eat and is also created in your liver and muscles. Your blood carries the glucose to all the cells in your body. Insulin is a chemical (a hormone) made in the part of the body called the pancreas. The pancreas releases insulin into the blood. Insulin then helps the sugars from food get into your cells. If your body doesn’t create enough insulin, or insulin doesn’t work properly, glucose can get into your cells. The glucose then stays in your blood causing you sugar levels to be too high, causing diabetes. There are three main types of diabetes in the world today. They are type 1diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes.
