Melbourne High School YEAR 9 ENGLISH SEMESTER ONE EXAMINATION - ISSUES AND ARGUMENT AND WRITING TASK Total reading time: 15 minutes Total writing time: 1 hour, 15 minutes TASK BOOKLET Directions to students 1. Materials · Task booklet of 4 pages including Assessment Criteria on page 4. · Lined paper. · You may use an English dictionary, but not a Thesaurus. 2. The Task · Use your 15 minute reading time to re-reading and thinking about the written material. · You are required to complete two tasks: (i) PART A: Comprehension and Evaluation – answer all questions. (ii) PART B: Writing Task – complete one piece of writing on one topic. · Follow the instructions on page 3 carefully (you will lose marks for careless errors by ignoring instructions). · It is recommended that you spend 30 minutes on Part A and 45 minutes on Part B. · Both parts will be equally weighted in the assessment. · Organise your time so that you give due weight to reading and thinking about the issue as well as writing your responses. · Ensure that you take care with your written answers, essay structure, written expression and punctuation. Clear handwriting, accurate spelling and punctuation, word usage and sentence structure will be taken into account in the assessment of your answer. · Write in biro, not pencil. · You may use additional lined paper for making notes, plans and drafts if you wish. This is not compulsory. 3. At the end of the task · Place your answer sheets inside this Question Booklet and submit.
