1984 The novel 1984, written by George Orwell takes place in the setting of Oceania, and the story takes place in London in the year 1984. Some conflicts in the novel are between the main character, Winston and his lover, Julia. Winston also has main conflict is with the government, known as Big Brother. He is against the Big Brother’s use of Telescreens and invasion of privacy of the people. The problem with Winston’s and Julia’s relationship is that the government trying to do away with love, by brainwashing the people by using fear. At the end of the story, Winston and Julia betray each other because they have been brainwashed with fear by O’Brien, a controller of the people. Winston had a big problem with Big Brother, the government, because they would not allow the people freedom, and they would always change the past by lying. One example is when they were at war with East Asia and then all of a sudden it was Eurasia all the time. The Big Brother also used telescreens to invade everyone’s privacy, the telescreens could not be turned off and the people were always being watched so they could not form a conspiracy against Big Brother. The only resolution to the problem was to accept Big Brother and learn to deal with it. In the end Winston was brainwashed to like big Brother. Melissa Douglas 1st Period 1984 The book, 1984, by George Orwell is not a book I would recommend to my friends. The whole book was about a communist government, called Big Brother that would tell the people that life was getting better, even though it was not. The government controlled the people by brainwashing them, and by also spying on them with Telescreens which gave the people no privacy. I especially did not like the story line about the guy who committed adultery to rebel against the government. Nor did I like the way people all of a sudden disappeared and no one ever thought of them again, like Winston’s mother and baby sister. I did not like the story in this book, and I did not like the thoughts the author used writing 1984.
