Capital Punishment for a Safer Society While the number of prisoners on death row has increased ten times over the last 50 years, the number of executions has decreased. Capital punishment is absolutely necessary in order to maintain a safe society. It takes convicted murderers and inflicts upon them the highest form of punishment, the taking of their lives. The conditions for capital punishment are very clear so that the punishment indeed fits the crime. With the technical advances of today, society can be confident that those put to death are indeed the perpetrators of crimes horrific in nature. Capital punishment benefits society in that it assures society that the criminal will not repeat the crime and also acts as a deterrent for other would-be criminals. The taking of another’s life is the most serious crime one can commit. The murderer must receive equal treatment in the form of death. Examples of such crimes would be murder with robbery being the motive or kidnapping ending in the death of the victim. The basis for capital punishment is the idea that every person is valuable and worthy of respect due to his or her ability to make rational and free choices.
