Introduction- PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS- Phonological awareness can be described as one's ability to ?... recognise the sound units of language..?(Rohl,M),whilst also being able to manipulate them. An example of a child's phonological awareness i s being able to recognise/ explain that the words ?Mouse? and ?House? rhyme. Or the fact that there are three syllables in the word ?Banana?, and that it also starts with the same sound as ?Basket?. It must be stressed that phonological awareness refers to the sounds of the language, rather than to the letters of the alphabet.
