First off, I have to say thank you for providing a medium of understanding for what is, in my opinion, the most important film ever made. But I feel you are a little off in your assessment of why HAL Kills Frank, the crew and tries to kill Dave. It has nothing to do with ego. HAL is equitable to a thirteen year old genius, and he is a bad liar. Kubrick's and Clarke's intentions were to show how little difference there ever is between man and his tools, machines, anything he creates.
