Tungsten (W) Tungsten was discovered in 1783 in Spain by Fausto and Juan Jose de Elhuyar. It has the highest melting point of all metals (and all elements other than carbon) at 3422°C, and so is used in missiles. It is also used in glass-to-metal seals, light bulb filaments, X-ray targets, heating elements in electrical appliances and electrical contact points in cars. Lead (Pb) Lead has been known since ancient times, its date of discovery is not known. It is believed to be the oldest metal. Lead’s many uses include: batteries, cable covering, ammunition, paint, shield around x-ray equipment, plumbing and in insecticides. Radium (Ra) Radium was discovered in 1898 by Pierre and Marie Curie in France. It is over a million times more radioactive than the same weight of uranium. It is luminescent and used in self-luminous paints and in treatment of cancer. Iron (Fe) Iron has been known since prehistoric times, and is mentioned in Genesis.
