Gone Are the Giants In Burt Solomon’s “Gone are the Giants” Solomon characterizes political giants as government officials that posses either a vast influence over the American people, anticipated historic importance, or a “larger-than-life” presence. Furthermore, the author explains how often times political giants are not, in fact, composed of the best men in politics. In turn, Solomon believes that these “political giants” are not formed on the basis of their good decisions/actions while in office. Instead, these elite politicians are defined by the conflicts faced by the American nation throughout their time in office, during which the presence of a true political powerhouse is “absolutely needed.” Throughout the article Solomon explains how often times “great presidents come very sporadically under very particular circumstances.” In doing so, he describes past political giants such as Lincoln, FDR, Johnson, and Nixon; all of whom were defined on the basis of their era of divergence.
