A new kind of beauty contest will be held in October. Miss Global Queen Philippines 2003 will win a cash prize, and the chance to represent the country in the Miss Global 2003 contest to be held in Montreal, Canada on November 19. Miss Global Queen Philippines is unique among beauty contests because it focuses on the country's indigenous peoples. Each contestant has to represent one of the country's 110 indigenous peoples. The contest is meant to heighten awareness of the wisdom, resources, talents, heritage and welfare of the indigenous cultural communities. Together with media and educational institutions, the organizers hope to call attention to the aesthetic, cultural and historical wealth that can be found among indigenous peoples.
