The cedar tree is frequently mentioned in Snow Falling on Cedars. It symbolises Ishmael and Hatsue’s freedom to escape the outside world and express their love for one another. The small hide away is a sanctuary from the harsh world of prejudice and racism that try to keep them apart. The cedar tree also symbolises isolation, which is endangering Hatsue and Ishmael’s relationship. They are unable to face the pressures and complications of their community.
