Jane Eyre
In the book Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, Jane is meant to be portrayed as a contradiction to the “ideal woman” of Victorian Literature. The ways in which she rejects the lifestyle of the “ideal woman” is that she is not an angel, she has lots of passion, and she does not know her place. The first way in which Jane is not the “ideal woman” is that she is not an angel. She even tells Mr. Rochester that, “I am not an angel”(264). Then, she goes on to say, “I had rather be a thing than an angel”(266).
