The book is a sequel to Gary Paulsens pervious book, Hatchet. Summer has long since passed and it is fall already. Brian (the main character), who is trapped alone in the wilderness from a plane crash, made it through the summer. He notices changes in the weather, then nature tests him. Will he be able to make it in the winter, in extreme, arctic, sub-zero conditions? Through the winter he learns to adapt. He learns the concept - if the world doesnt adapt to you, you adapt to the world. He made an airtight shelter to live in complete with a fire pit and everything.
