A man in New York murders his girlfriend’s daughter because she was interfering with his view of the TV. A mother in Philadelphia is so doped up on cocaine that her two infants starve to death. Incidents like this happen every day, all around the world. In The Lord of the Flies William Golding tries to put into words how evil society really is. He uses many symbols to represent this evil. One point that Golding tries to put across with this book is that there is no hope. The boys ask for a sign that they will be rescued from the island and they will be safe. What they get is a dead parachutist. This dead man becomes “the beast” to the inhabitants of the island. This “beast”, their symbol of hope, represents regression and devolution. The parachutist is referred to as an ape, then a creature, and finally, a thing.
