Commedia Dell Arte is a colourful and extremely theatrical art form an now a form of professional theatre It is based on the interaction of traditional stock characters in improvised scenarios that follow a comic plot. Commedia Dell Arte meaning comedy of artists. Unlike traditional theatre, Commedia troupes featured skilled actresses rather than males playing the female characters. It originated in streets and market places of the early Italian renaissance and went on for 200 years, although its roots can be traced back as far as Ancient Greek and Roman Theatre. The performing stages were informal or in conventional staging areas. On the faces of these characters donned masks with exaggerated comic features to draw additional attention to themselves and complement their physical and acrobatic skills.
