Jim Morrison James Douglas Morrison was born on December 8, 1943 in Melbourne, Florida. He was the youngest of three children. Jim’s father was an admiral in the navy, so his family moved a lot. This partially contributed to his “difficult” behavior as a teen. By the time he was thirteen, his family had moved ten times. (Jim Morrison p.74) In Jim’s preteen years, he made good grades and was on good terms with his teachers. When Jim became a teenager, he was more difficult. He began listening to rock music and reading magazines such as Mad. He was constantly late for class and like to use excuses like being kidnapped by gypsies or having a brain tumor operated on. (Jim Morrison p.75) Jim enrolled in Florida State University and later transferred to the University on California in Los Angeles, where he enrolled in film school. This is where he first tried LSD. While in school there, he also made his first film, which was a disaster. It was later followed though, by two award-winning films. (Internet) Jim mentioned to his friend one night that he had been writing songs. This was the beginning of the band The Doors. They began playing at clubs on the strip and after acquiring a solid group of fans, decided to record. They soon released their first album, which would be their biggest seller. Three weeks after their first performance, they played with the Grateful Dead. “Even after this success, the Doors were surprised that San Francisco liked them. The lyrics of other bands spoke of love and peace. The lyrics of the Doors were about sex and death.” (Jim Morrison p.78) Eventually, Jim was becoming “more and more unreliable.” (Jim Morrison p.80) He began missing shows and having run ins with the police. The band began to get fed up. Jim had also developed a drinking problem which made him very hard to control. He would perform drunk, which caused him to do gross and tactless things on stage. The band, eventually, was only able to play in Mexico. The Doors fifth and final album was released in 1971. On March 13, 1971, Jim and his girlfriend moved to Paris. He spent most of his time working on his poetry. He met up with two well known film makers. Jim’s attempt to be a film star failed. There are two distinctly different accounts of Jim’s death on July 3, 1971.” (Jim Morrison p. 94) The first is an official report given by Pamela, Jim’s girlfriend.
