According to the Ethics Awareness Inventory CD the category that is most closely aligned in philosophy with the deontological theory of Immanuel Kant and John Rawls best describes me. (Ruggierio 1997) The Ethics Awareness Ethics Awareness Inventory CD analysis revealed that I tend to base my ethical perspective on an individual’s duty or obligation to do what is morally right.- principles that represent what rational persons ought to morally do. The study showed that I believe that ethical conduct appeals to the “conscience. “ In judging whether a person’s actions are ethical, I looked at the intent behind his/her actions, rather than focusing on the results. To be considered ethical, we choose how we act and what rules we are willing to follow. From my perspective, ethical principles must be: (a) appropriate under any circumstance; (b) respectful of human dignity; and (c) committed to the accomplishment of some defined “end.” The end does not justify the means. ( Ruggeri) The Ethics Awareness Inventory CD made me more aware of my ethical style. According to this study, I believe that human beings have intrinsic value and that we have a right to individual respect. (Williams 2003) Therefore, I cannot support social traditions and policies aimed at “the best interest of society as a whole” if any individual is denied the opportunities to which he/she is entitled as human being. My approach to ethics requires that it be within legal and humane limits, people should be allowed to make their own choices. Acting in response to impulse, instinct, or rules worked out by others for us to obey does not constitute ethical conduct on our part.
