History Essay Although the Gallipoli Campaign was a great loss for Australia, It created our identity as a nation and brought us closer together as a people. We fought bravely throughout the campaign in the harsh conditions, became renowned for being excellent soldiers & we always had a smile on our face and a joke to crack. Australians made a point of saluting the man not the rank, as it wasn’t your level in the army that gained their respect, it was your attitude and friendship towards them in and after battle. The Gallipoli Campaign was a complete disaster, but this disaster helped create the Australian sense of mateship and Australia’s Identity with the rest of the world. We were seen as larrikins, we loved to show off and have some fun, no matter where we were or what we were doing.
