Alex Haley's Queen

In Alex Haley’s “Queen”, Haley attempts to recreate a piece of American history by tracing back the life of his grandmother Queen Jackson Haley. This movie takes off in the mid 1800’s on a plantation in Alabama where the birth of a mulatto child from a mulatto slave woman and her white slave master and her journey through life. Haley takes us back in time when slavery and the color of your skin ruled the country. Where black and white had a distinct line that could never be crossed in any type of social settings outside the traditional plantation life style. We could see the ups and downs of being of mixed heritage. How society reacts to people of color. We learned how certain behaviors were tolerated and accepted from people of that time. The main characters of the film were Queen played by Halle Berry, Jasmine Guy as Easter, Timothy Daly as Col James Jackson, Ann Margret as Sally Jackson, Dennis Haysberry as Davis, and Danny Glover as Alex Haley. Queen’s life story takes us from the beginning of her existence, through hardships and eventually her achievements as a black woman of that time. Queen’s circumstances at birth put her in an arena that no child or adult could expect to be prepared for. Queen was marked from the time she was conceived. Her parents were in a forbidden relationship of that time was the first major issue. Interracial dating in the slavery times was something that was definitely not heard of, however, slave masters did have sexual relations with their slaves resulting in mulatto children.
