The Actor's Nightmare Character Analysis
George from The Actor’s Nightmare by Christopher Durang WHO? The character’s name is George Spelvin. I’m not trying to act like a male when I do the piece. However, I always have a picture in my head of the character I’m portraying and I seem to always have a male in my head for this role, so I’ll stick with his name being George. George always got good grades in math and science. He got by in English because he’s book smart, however creative writing always gave him trouble. He is now an accountant and enjoys his work for the most part. He is single, but hoping to fulfill the American dream…wife, house, car, 2.3 kids. He seems to be well on his way. WHAT? George is having a dream that he is in three plays simultaneously. At any given moment the play could be Hamlet, Private Lives, or Checkmate. He is unfamiliar with all three plays and can’t recall attending a rehearsal for any of them. The cast and crew of the “show” actually think he’s the understudy for the star, Edwin Booth. George is very frazzled, but by this point has figured out the gist of the plays and is going along with them fairly well. However the point where I pick up is when all the actors have left the stage and George is left on his own, with no one to play off of.
