The Internet: Clear and Present Danger
“The Internet: A Clear and Present Danger?” Cathleen Cleaver, counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee on the Constitution, delivered a speech at Boston University in October 1997. During her speech, she maintains the importance of the government imposing laws on the Internet to regulate people's conduct especially where children could fall as victims. Cleaver does a really good job of using ethos, logos and particularly pathos in her argument to her audience which probably consisted mostly of parents. Cleaver worked in Washington D.C., at the Family Research Center. This position gives the persona of someone with family values and an advocacy for children. In paragraph three of Cleaver's speech, she claims that the Internet can be a “clear and present danger” if there are no laws to regulate people's conduct, especially where children are concerned. Pornography, specifically, is highly accessible to anyone using the Internet. There is little restriction put on people posting pornographic material on the Internet. Cleaver uses ethos, as a professional, educated, activist to reach out to the public, specifically parents, to speak out to the government and try to have laws passed that will protect the children.
