“If we are to continue to inhabit the Earth there will have to be a revolution in the relationship of humans to the Earth and of humans to each other and to other species that share the Earth with us.” (Charles Birch). This relationship between species, humans and the Earth begins at a local level. Victoria Park Nature Reserve (V.P.N.R.) is home to countless species of plants and animals making up a diverse ecosystem. Located 8km south of Alstonville on the Far North Coast of NSW is V.P.N.R. It is 17.5 hectares in size and is one of 41 remnants of the ‘Big Scrub’. The protection of V.P.N.R. is crucial to maintain its genetic diversity along with its utility, intrinsic and heritage value. This protection also assists in creating an ecosystem rich in diversity, increasing its resilience, making V.P.N.R. accessible to future generations and improving the relationship between humans and the earth. V.P.N.R has undergone rainforest reforestation to improve its survival rate. The area has to be closely watched and attended to because of its smaller size. Research has shown that remnants have to be at least 15ha in size to survive.
