what is the meaning or meaningless of style in youth subcultures
Essay question: what is the meaning or meaningless of style in youth subcultures? By Ella Swehli Since the Second World War in 1945 society has changed in many different ways. People felt liberated, and could do what they liked. One of the main changes that took place was the youth subculture. The youth subcultures before the Second World War were expected to follow into their parent’s footsteps. The boys were suppose to follow their father’s occupation (mainly the mining industry) and the girls were expected to follow their mothers by getting married young and staying at home. However, after the world war young people started to change their lives, they made changes that still go on in today’s society. The youth culture was finally being heard and people started to understand that they do not always follow their parent’s path in life. Their sense of style was one of the main things that changed. The working class youths were not seeing themselves as the underclass so much, but started to accept who they are and what their backgrounds are. Subcultures such as skinheads that represented the white working class males were formed. In this paper I shall look at the different ways in which the youth subculture has changed through their “style” and what their style actually represents and if it represents anything at all. The main groups that will be looked at are the working and middle class males as they were the most dominate at that time. I will also try and link the meaning of style then to the meaning of style in modern day society. Young people in Britain have become a focus of attention. They are seen by the as a “problem” by the adult generation. Sociological analysis of youth subcultures has adopted the view that youth cultures are a problem within society. Youth culture of the post war period has suddenly demanded that they be heard and seen in every possible way. Participants of these subcultures dress flamboyantly and distinctively, are noisy and demonstrative in public places, and appear to behave defiantly in such a way as to attract condemnation (Harrison et al, pg 189). The main way that, that the youth culture could express them selves was through their ‘personal’ style. Each subculture would take on a particular style. This style then becomes part of who they are and what they represent. The main factors that affect their styles are things such as class, music, and ethic background (Harrison et al, pg189). One of the most popular subcultures that took place in the early 1980’s was the punk culture. The expressed themselves through ways the way they dyed and styled their hair, the clothes they wore and the music they listened to. The punk culture was a way for youths to prove that they can be free and do what they liked. This sense of style gives members an identity and enables them to recognize them selves and others that are apart of the same identity group as them. British society as experienced many different subcultures over the years, groups such as skinheads, teddy boys, rockers punks etc.
