"I'm going on a diet." How often have you casually tossed around these five words” (Pettiford 339)? People want to know how to lose weight. Dieters read magazines, newspapers, watch television and sign up on weight loss programs just to try to find the right way or quickest way to lose weight. Most Americans are so intelligent, so why is it that they can’t lose weight? The question today is “How do you lose the weight and keep it off?” “The number of obese Americans has grown by nearly 50% in the past decade” (Pettiford 339). That’s why people try to find different ways to lose weight and many of them are just lazy and don’t want to change their eating habits. Dieters desperate to lose weight read magazines and books that say to either diet or exercise. Diet and exercising are the two main ways of losing weight. However, you have to lose weight in a healthy manner. Weight loss is what everyone talks about and wants to know, how did she or he lose the weight? They ask themselves, “Why didn’t I lose the weight? Why is it so hard for me?” There are many different weight loss plans and many different exercise programs you can do to lose weight. In order to lose weight, you need to diet healthy, exercise 3-5 times a week and then you can begin to maintain the lost weight. But in reality, it has to be a change in life style. You need to make sure you go on a diet and exercise that you can do for the rest of your life. “Suggestions for living a healthier lifestyle are given, including how to lose weight through exercise and good eating habits” (Chriss 44). Supporters of exercising feel that exercising is the best way of losing weight and that you will benefit from it the most rather than dieting. The most important thing is you have to want to exercise and feel good about yourself that you’re taking time out to do so because you will definitely benefit from it later on in life. However, people’s way of loosing their weight is to over exercise. Or they don’t exercise at all. “The nation's Surgeon General reports that nearly 60 percent of Americans do not get enough exercise. And 25 percent aren't active at all” (Geiger 190). Exercising is very important for your body. “It changes the way you make use of nutrients. It changes the way your body burns its stored energy. Also, it changes the way you eat, drink, and smoke” (Konin 143). There is a lot of information on losing weight. “It takes 3,500 calories of decreased food intake or energy to lose one pound of weight” (Konin 143). Supporters of exercising say that the most common means of exercise is walking. Many women and men walk at least 45 minutes a day to burn calories in order to loose weight. “Book after book outlines new methods for losing weight, but many women are finding that the simple approach of walking on a daily basis is the best method for them” (Bilyeau 72).
