Civil Engineering came into existence in the19th century. It was started with the design and construction of roads and bridges. Most of these roads and bridges were built for military purposes so the name for the designers came to be “military engineer.” Soon after, an interest in making better living conditions by constructing buildings, water, and sewage systems grew. Since these facilities dealt mainly with civilians the name “Civil Engineer” was now used to classify such engineers. Engineering students were mostly taught by way of apprenticeship under engineering professionals. They were said to be gaining practical experience along with the academics. In 1852 the American Society of Civil Engineers was founded.
