October Sky Essay Homer Hickam was a successful man. However, before all had happened, life in Coalwood, West Virginia, was very difficult because they were poor, and not many people who lived there rarely had any hopes and dreams and stuck through it all; except for being a football player and getting a scholarship. Homer had hopes and dreams, but it wasn’t to be a football player, it was to be a rocket scientist. He found his passion by the inspiration of Sputnik, the first Russian satellite ever to be brought in space. The fact of flying objects into space fascinated him, and so he and the other three rocket boys stuck to it and made history. Of all, many of his friends and family believed his passion would not go anywhere, but to be a mere hobby. The one person that contributed to Homer’s success would be his own father.
